CHINA TEAM Navigates in China

CHINA TEAM are spending the next ten days between Hong Kong and Shenzhen organising their first Sailing Camp. Fifteen Chinese sailors are taking part alongside CHINA TEAM and are being tested, supervised and trained, both on land and at sea. The point of the exercise is to earn a place within the team which will compete in May in Valence.

The first contact with the Middle Kingdom was the select Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club who welcomed the team for a dinner and conference, Friday 3 March, the evening of their arrival in Hong Kong. Xavier de Lesquen and Luc Gellusseau took the opportunity to present their project to the members of the Yacht Club, and explain their requirements and hopes for the team. CHINA TEAM has captured the imaginations of everyone and is a passionate subject for all those involved. The questions followed rapidly: “How many Chinese are on board?” “Why China?”  “Which boat?” “Which language will be spoken on board?” etc.

It was also a chance for the team to thank the RHKYC for its support in organising the various operations in China (the availability of match racing yachts and back-up boats) and express thanks to Franck Pong, a prominent member of the Club, who will welcome the team on his two Maxi-boats, 11 and 12 March next. Franck Pong is  pioneer of sailing in China since the early seventies. He played an important role in the fate of the Yacht Club during the nineties and is working towards developing sailing as a sport in Mainland China
